Science: Roller Coasters

In class we have been busy building Roller Coasters to help us understand forces and motion. It was a very engaging task with everyone working well together to design, test and build some amazing Roller Coasters.

Fireflies by Owl City in Auslan

In class we have been learning about metaphors and other figurative language. We recently read the book 'My two blankets'. Cartwheel, the main character, comes to a new country to be safe, but everything around her is strange. She cannot understand what people are saying and she doesn't feel like herself anymore. This book, by Irena Kobald and Freya Blackwood, explores the power language has to make us feel included and safe, like a blanket. As Cartwheel's confidence with the language grows, and she learns to weave words together, she doesn't feel so foreign anymore.

Using Auslan, Australian sign language, we tried to put on Cartwheel's shoes. We learnt a basic conversation so students were able to say 'Hello, my name is _____, question/answer, question/answer'.

The video below is of the class performing Fireflies by Owl City in Auslan. We focused on the sign language so they are using a video to help with the lyrics.
